This page provides detailed information on the SASMO competition's objectives, awards, features, and value of participation.
I. SASMO Competition Objectives
Founded in 2006, SASMO is one of the largest mathematics competitions in Asia. The number of participants in SASMO 2016 has expanded from 155 local participants in 2006 to over 20,000 participants from 19 countries. More than 100 schools from Singapore participated in SASMO 2016.
With the support of its advisory committee, the SASMO team spends countless hours meticulously crafting competition papers—which cover both school mathematics and Olympiad mathematics. Compared to purely Olympiad papers, this comprehensive effort allows participants to perform better because they are familiar with some problems and can apply their thinking skills to others, thus stimulating their inner mathematician.

The SASMO competition sets realistic and high standards, aiming to expand the untapped thinking potential of students. Participation in SASMO will help them improve their school mathematics and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS).
II. SASMO Competition Awards

Perfect Score Award:
The winner of a perfect score will receive a special medal, a paper certificate, and a digital certificate. They will also qualify for the SIMOC (Global Competition) and the STEAM AHEAD-IJMO (Global Competition), with the opportunity to join the International Youth Honor Society (IJHS) and the Young Achievement Leaders Academy (YALA), and receive a $100 cash prize.
Gold Award: Top 8%
The winner will receive a medal, a paper certificate, and a digital certificate. They will also qualify for the SIMOC (Global Competition) and the STEAM AHEAD-IJMO (Global Competition), with the opportunity to join the International Youth Honor Society (IJHS) and the Young Achievement Leaders Academy (YALA).
Silver Award: 8%-20%
The winner will receive a medal, a paper certificate, and a digital certificate. They will also qualify for the SIMOC (Global Competition) and the STEAM AHEAD-IJMO (Global Competition).
Bronze Award: 21%-40%
Receive a medal, paper certificate, and electronic certificate, and qualify for the SIMOC competition.
Honorary Award: 41%-50%
Receive an electronic certificate.
Participation Award: 51%-100%
Receive an electronic certificate.
III. Features of the SASMO Competition
Challenging Problems: Including a wide range of mathematical knowledge, testing students' thinking abilities and problem-solving skills.
Emphasis on Individual Performance: Focuses on participants' mathematical knowledge and potential, requiring extensive independent practice.
Multi-disciplinary Assessment: Covers fundamental knowledge in algebra, geometry, and probability, as well as advanced mathematical content.
Time Pressure: The exam is time-pressured, requiring excellent time management skills and rapid problem-solving techniques.
Intense Competition: Rigorous preliminary selection; only those who excel in the preliminary round can advance to the finals.
IV. Value of Participating in the SASMO Competition
1. Ignites Students' Passion for Mathematics, Cultivating Their Strong Interest and Profound Thinking Abilities
The unique aspect of the SASMO competition lies in its focus on igniting students' passion and love for mathematics, cultivating their mathematical thinking abilities through ingenious teaching methods. The competition employs a novel teaching approach, concretizing abstract mathematical problems, allowing students to deeply understand mathematical concepts through objects and diagrams, thereby cultivating rigorous and logical thinking.
2. Developing internationally standardized test questions to meet the diverse learning needs of students at all grade levels.
The SASMO competition is committed to providing students with an internationally aligned mathematics learning platform, designing corresponding test questions for students of different grades to meet their mathematical learning needs. This initiative aims to allow students to challenge themselves in the competition, expand their mathematical thinking, cultivate problem-solving abilities, and lay a solid foundation for their future studies.
3. Providing abundant rewards and academic support to help students improve their mathematics skills.
The SASMO competition offers multiple awards, providing generous rewards and academic support to participating students. 40% of participating students have the opportunity to win a bronze medal or higher, and all participating students will receive an officially customized performance analysis report, providing comprehensive feedback on their academic performance to help them better understand and improve their mathematics skills.
