This page provides detailed information on the SASMO competition, the CPA teaching methodology, SIMCC, SIMOC, and IJMO.

I. Introduction to the SASMO Competition

The Singapore & Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO), officially known as the Singapore Advanced Education Mathematics Competition, is an international mathematics competition organized by the Singapore International Mathematics Competition Centre (SIMCC). Originating from the "CPA (Critical Thinking Process) Methodology," SASMO is a highly regarded and acclaimed mathematics competition.

The SASMO competition, organized by the Singapore International Mathematics Competition Centre (SIMCC), is open to students in grades 1-12. Founded in 2006, SASMO is one of the largest and most prestigious mathematics competitions in Asia. The competition aims to stimulate students' interest in mathematical problem-solving and cultivate their mathematical intuition, reasoning, logic, creativity, and critical thinking.

The "CPA Methodology" has long been a legend in Singaporean mathematics education due to its ability to quickly help children understand mathematical concepts. Since its inception, it has been emulated by many countries. For example, in France, over 500 schools adopted Singaporean mathematics textbooks last year.

II. SASMO Competition - CPA Teaching Methodology

The SASMO competition originated from the CPA teaching method, whose core modeling is a process of transforming complexity into simplicity.

Concrete ⇒ Pictorial ⇒ Abstract

The goal of the SASMO competition is to help students gain proficiency in the transformation from concrete to abstract in the process of solving mathematical problems through problem design. This process includes three stages: concreteness, visualization, and abstraction, aiming to cultivate students' mathematical thinking abilities. Specifically:

Concrete Stage: Combining professional mathematical teaching aids with instruction to effectively cultivate children's number sense;

Pictorial Stage: Expressing problems through images, preparing for the transition to abstraction;

Abstract Stage: Abstracting complex mathematical problems into simple mathematical diagrams for easier understanding by children.

The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SASMO), as an important mathematics competition in Singapore, provides a platform for participating students to showcase their mathematical talents. Students who win medals will have the opportunity to be invited to participate in other important competitions within the Singapore International Mathematics Competitions Challenge (SIMCC). Gold and silver medalists will have the even greater chance of being invited to participate in the most challenging International Junior Mathematics Olympiad (IJMO) organized by SIMCC, a crucial pathway for selecting prospective members of the Singapore Mathematics National Team.

In terms of personal development, winning medals will significantly enhance a student's competitiveness when applying to top universities. For example, prestigious universities such as the National University of Singapore, which has consistently ranked highly in the QS World University Rankings in recent years, hold mathematics competition winners in very high regard. These competition results will become shining credentials for students applying to top universities, laying a solid foundation for their future academic careers.

III. Introduction to the SASMO Competition - SIMCC

The Singapore International Mathematics Competitions Committee (SIMCC) is one of the largest mathematics competition organizers in Singapore and Asia. SIMCC is a non-profit organization, and the committee donates 20% of its competition proceeds to students and teachers.

SIMCC organizes international academic competitions in English, mathematics, science, programming, information science, STEM/STEAM, and leadership in over 40 countries and regions. It is dedicated to popularizing educational competitions through thinking games, fostering student interaction, collaboration, and building lasting friendships across borders.

SIMCC has offices in Cambodia (Phnom Penh), Hong Kong/Macau, India (Mumbai), Indonesia (Jakarta), and Singapore, and partners in 32 countries/regions, with over 600,000 participants across 29 competitions and assessments.

IV. Introduction to SASMO Competition - SIMOC

The Singapore International Mathematical Olympiad (SIMOC) is Asia's premier mathematics competition, divided into individual and team events.

Participation is limited to students in government schools from Primary 2 to Secondary 4, and only those who have achieved a bronze medal or higher in the SASMO or AMO are eligible to participate in SIMOC.

As one of the highest-level mathematics competitions in Asia, this competition aims to inspire young people's love and interest in mathematics, and cultivate their mathematical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

By participating in SIMOC, students can challenge themselves, showcase their talent and strength in mathematics, and have the opportunity to exchange and learn with students from different countries and regions, broadening their horizons.

V. Introduction to SASMO and IJMO

IJMO, the International Mathematical Olympiad for Youth, is Singapore's premier mathematics competition, primarily aimed at students with a special interest and aptitude for mathematics.

Participants must be students in government schools from Primary 2 to Secondary 4, and only those who have achieved a silver medal or higher in the Singapore and Asian School Mathematical Olympiad (SASMO) or the American Mathematical Olympiad (AMO) are eligible to participate in IJMO.

Due to the high starting point of the participants, IJMO results undoubtedly add significant prestige to students' academic journeys.

This fully demonstrates the positive role of mathematics competitions in cultivating young people's mathematical abilities and unlocking their potential, while also providing students with important reference points for university admissions.
